How to Use Na-Adjectives in Japanese: Describing Things

Hello! In the previous lesson, we studied "i-adjectives," which end in "い". In this lesson, we will master their partner—"na-adjectives."
These are very friendly words that are used with almost the same rules as nouns. By mastering them, you will further expand your range of expression!

🎯 Lesson Goal

Learn to use "na-adjectives" in the form 「〜は、〜です」 to describe states and express impressions!

Step 1 Discover

Let's look at how Na-adjectives are used to describe things in a conversation. Yuki and Leo are walking in the city.

👩
Yuki

このまちは とても しずかです

(Kono machi wa totemo shizuka desu.)

👨
Leo

そうですね。あの公園も きれいです

(Sou desu ne. Ano kouen mo kirei desu.)

💡

Did you notice?

The rule is exactly the same as saying "I am a student" (Gakusei desu). They just replaced the noun with an adjective to describe the town and the park!

Step 2 The Pattern

Here is the most basic chunk for describing an object or phenomenon using a Na-adjective.

Basic Chunk

です。

( wa desu.)

🔑 Key Point: What are "Na-adjectives"?

"Na-adjectives" are adjectives that take a "な (na)" when placed directly in front of a noun to modify it. (e.g., きれい公園 - a beautiful park).

🌟 Pro Tip: Noun Rules Apply!

When ending a sentence, the rules are exactly the same as for nouns. You just add 〜です (desu) for affirmative, and 〜ではありません (dewa arimasen) for negative!

Step 3 Pattern Practice

Keep the chunk exactly the same, but swap the words in the blank. Read these out loud!

  • Quiet / Calm This park (Kono kouen)

    この公園は しずか です。

    (Kono kouen wa shizuka desu.)

  • Famous Mt. Fuji (Fuji-san)

    富士山は ゆうめい です。

    (Fuji-san wa yuumei desu.)

  • Convenient Japan's Subway (Nihon no chikatetsu)

    日本の地下鉄は べんり です。

(Nihon no chikatetsu wa benri desu.)

Step 4 Make It Yours!

Now it's your turn! Pick words from the Cheat Sheet below and try describing your own town, job, or favorite things out loud.

Summary Lesson Review

Na-Adjectives: Adjectives that take a 「な」(na) when modifying a noun directly (e.g., kirei na kouen).

Basic Structure: Use 〜は [na-adjective] です to describe states. The conjugation rules at the end of a sentence are the same as nouns.

Negative Form: Use ではありません (dewa arimasen) or じゃない (ja nai), exactly like you would with nouns.
