How to Say "Because" in Japanese: Explaining Reasons (...node)
Hello and welcome to the adventures of Phase 5! From this moment on, we will aim for deeper communication by logically structuring your 'thoughts'.
We will study 'conjunctions' that connect the simple sentences you've learned before and give your statements persuasiveness. By adding a reason to your actions, your conversation will immediately become more meaningful and smooth!
🎯 Lesson Goal
Learn to build logical chains by connecting a reason/basis and its resulting consequence using the form
「〜ので、〜」 (〜node, 〜)!
Step 1 Discover
Let's look at how this is used in a real conversation. Notice how the reason connects to the result.
どうして昨日電話しませんでしたか?
(Doushite kinou denwa shimasen deshita ka?)
とても眠かったので、すぐに寝てしまいました。
(Totemo nemukattanode, sugu nete shimaimashita.)
Did you notice?
Leo uses「ので」 (node)to connect his reason ("I was sleepy") with the result ("I fell asleep immediately"). It works just like "so" or "because" in English!
Step 2 The Pattern
Here is the standard structure for expressing a reason and its consequence.
Basic Chunk
ので、
( node, )
🔑 Key Point: Connecting different types of words
With Verbs & i-adjectives: Simply attach ので (node).
Example: 寒いので (samui node - because it's cold)
With Nouns & na-adjectives: You must add な (na) before ので.
Example: 休みなので (yasumi na node - because it's a day off)
Step 3 Pattern Practice
Read these useful combinations out loud to get used to the rhythm of the sentence!
-
Verb Money (o-kane)
お金がないので、買い物ができません。
(O-kane ga nai node, kaimono ga dekimasen.)
-
na-adjective Famous (yuumei)
このレストランは有名なので、混んでいます。
(Kono resutoran wa yuumei na node, konde imasu.)
-
Verb (Past) Broke (kowareta)
エアコンが壊れたので、とても暑いです。
(Eakon ga kowareta node, totemo atsui desu.)
Step 4 Make It Yours!
This is the most important step! Use your current state or feelings as a reason to talk about your next action. Pick words from the Cheat Sheet below.
👉 REASON ので、 RESULT です。
Vocabulary Cheat Sheet
Reasons (理由)
- あつい atsui (hot)
- ねむい nemui (sleepy)
- おなかがすいた onaka ga suita (hungry)
- やすみだ yasumi da (day off)
Consequences (結果)
- でかけません dekakemasen (don't go out)
- はやくねます hayaku nemasu (go to bed early)
- なにかたべます nani ka tabemasu (eat something)
- がんばります ganbarimasu (I'll do my best)
Bonus Go Beyond the Basics
In real life, you'll also need to say "Because it is NOT..." and speak casually with friends. Here’s a quick guide to leveling up your conversation!
🙅♀️ 1. Because it is NOT... (Negative)
寒くないので
(Samukunai node - Because it's not cold)
休みじゃないので
(Yasumi ja nai node - Because it's not a day off)
🤝 2. Friendly & Casual (から)
寒いから。
("Samui kara" - substituting 'node' with 'kara')
寒いんで。
("Samui nde" - very native slang)
Summary Lesson Review
Reason and Result: Use 〜ので (node) to connect a reason to a consequence, similar to "so" or "because" in English.
Connecting Nouns: When connecting nouns or na-adjectives to ので, you must add な (na) before it (e.g., 休みなので).
Casual Alternates: In casual conversation, you can substitute "node" with から (kara) or the shortened んで (nde).
