How to Say "I am" in Japanese: Self-Introduction Basics (Watashi wa ... desu)

Welcome to Speakable Japanese! This is your starting point.
To begin, let's master the most basic and essential part of any conversation—the self-introduction. Let's learn to confidently state our name and profession in Japanese!

🎯 Lesson Goal

Learn to clearly state your name, occupation, and nationality using the chunk 「私は〇〇です」 (Watashi wa 〇〇 desu)!

Step 1 Discover

Let's look at how this is used in a real conversation. Two people are meeting for the first time.

👩
Anna

はじめまして。私はアンナです。学生です。

(Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Anna desu. Gakusei desu.)

👨
Tanaka

はじめまして。田中です。エンジニアです。

(Hajimemashite. Tanaka desu. Enjinia desu.)

💡

Did you notice?

Anna says "Watashi wa ~ desu", but Tanaka omits "Watashi wa" and simply says "Tanaka desu". We will explain this trick in Step 2!

Step 2 The Pattern

Here is the most powerful and useful chunk for introducing yourself.

Basic Chunk

私は です。

(Watashi wa desu.)

🔑 Key Point: The Particle 'は' (wa)

The Hiragana character「は」is usually read as "ha". However, when it is used as a topic marker, it is pronounced as "wa". Think of "Watashi wa" as meaning "As for me...".

🌟 Pro Tip: Drop the "Watashi wa"

Just like Tanaka did in Step 1, native speakers often omit "Watashi wa". When it's obvious you are talking about yourself, simply saying "Anna desu" or "Gakusei desu" sounds much more natural!

Step 3 Pattern Practice

Keep the chunk exactly the same, but swap the words in the blank. Read these out loud!

  • Name Tanaka

    私は 田中 です。

    (Watashi wa Tanaka desu.)

  • Occupation Doctor (isha)

    私は 医者 です。

    (Watashi wa isha desu.)

  • Nationality American (Amerika-jin)

    私は アメリカ人 です。

    (Watashi wa Amerika-jin desu.)

Step 4 Make It Yours!

Now it's your turn! Pick words from the Cheat Sheet below (or use your real information) and complete your own self-introduction out loud.

Bonus Go Beyond the Basics

In real life, you'll also need to say "I am NOT..." and speak casually with friends. Here’s a quick guide to leveling up your conversation!

🙅‍♀️ 1. I am NOT... (Negative)

Basic / Formal

学生 ではありません

(Gakusei dewa arimasen.)

Casual (Friends)

学生 じゃない

(Gakusei ja nai.)

🤝 2. Friendly & Casual

Just the word

田中。

("Tanaka" - dropping "desu")

With friendly emphasis

田中 だよ

(Tanaka da yo.)

Summary Lesson Review

The Basic Structure: Use 私は〜です (Watashi wa ~ desu) to introduce yourself, such as your name, occupation, or nationality.

Pronunciation of "は": When used as a topic marker, the Hiragana 「は」 is pronounced as "wa".
