How to Ask "Where is...?" in Japanese: Finding Locations (Doko desu ka)

Hello! In the previous lesson, you learned to ask about objects using the phrase 'What is this?'. In this adventure, you will master an extremely important question that will allow you to expand your range of action.
It's the question about location: 'Where is it?'. With this magic word, you will no longer get lost anywhere in Japan. Let's gain the power to help you reach your destination!

🎯 Lesson Goal

Learn to ask about the location of people, objects, and buildings using the chunk 「〜はどこですか?」 (〜 wa doko desu ka?)!

Step 1 Discover

Let's look at how this is used in a real conversation. Leo is looking for the station and asks a local, Yuki, for help.

👨
Leo

すみません、一番近い駅はどこですか?

(Sumimasen, ichiban chikai eki wa doko desu ka?)

👩
Yuki

あそこです。あのビルの隣です。

(Asoko desu. Ano biru no tonari desu.)

💡

Did you notice?

Leo uses the magic question wordどこ (doko)to ask "where", and Yuki answers withあそこ (asoko), which indicates a location far from both of them!

Step 2 The Pattern

Here is the most powerful and useful chunk for finding your way around.

Basic Chunk

は どこ ですか?

( wa doko desu ka?)

🔑 Key Point: The Word 'どこ' (doko)

'どこ' is the question word for asking about a place, corresponding to the English 'Where'. You can easily ask about a location by simply placing the name of what you are looking for before 'はどこですか?'.

🌟 Pro Tip: 'ここ・そこ・あそこ'

The answer to a "Where?" question uses words that indicate a place. They form a set: ここ (koko) is here/near the speaker, そこ (soko) is there/near the listener, and あそこ (asoko) is over there/far from both!

Step 3 Pattern Practice

Keep the chunk exactly the same, but swap the words in the blank. Read these out loud!

  • Location The Toilet (Toire)

    トイレ はどこですか?

    (Toire wa doko desu ka?)

  • Store Section The Entrance (Iriguchi)

    入り口 はどこですか?

    (Iriguchi wa doko desu ka?)

  • Person Mr. Sato (Satou-san)

    佐藤さん はどこですか?

    (Satou-san wa doko desu ka?)

Step 4 Make It Yours!

Now it's your turn! Imagine you are looking for something while traveling or in a new building. Pick words from the Cheat Sheet below and complete your own question out loud.
